Humanitarian of the year, Director of the Program in Innovation and Health at MIT
José Gómez-Márquez, the 32-year-old Honduran in three editions, has been awarded prizes for his technological inventions to improve medicine in the Third World and this year the magazine of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Technology Review, has proclaimed him " humanitarian of the year ". "My goal is to facilitate medicine in countries where you can not practice because of lack of instruments" Among their projects include a device for the mass supply of medicines to inhale and vaccines to populations with difficulty accessing medication. Or the XoutTB a system for monitoring the medication for the treatment of tuberculosis, which rewards good behavior of the patient. Like everything Gómez-Márquez does, it's very simple: a textured paper similar to the coffee filter, numbered by days. After taking the pill, the patient leaves a drop of urine (with traces of the medicine) on the number that, in contact with the liquid, reveals a code. The patient sends it by SMS. If at the end of the month he has not failed even a single day, he receives prizes. Gómez-Márquez currently heads the MIT International Health Laboratory with 17 researchers, which was created in 2007 to support his research work. See more here.
